In the wintertime, count on the earliest snows at the Big Boulder Ski Resort in Pennsylvania, but that doesn’t mean that you should forget going there in the summer. Located on the western shore of Big Boulder Lake, you can hike and swim, boat and fish in summer in areas that are snowy wonderlands in winter. Mountain biking can take you over some of the same ski runs in July that you hurtled down in December. Daytime high temperatures in the 70’s ensure your comfort in whatever activities you chose.

You’ll find excellent paddling rivers nearby; check out the Tunkhannock Creek, in Monroe/Carbon County, only 2 miles from the Big Boulder Ski Area, 4.4 miles along Pennsylvania Route 115 to Pennsylvania Route 940. You can dip into the Lehigh River at numerous locations within 16 miles of Big Boulder: you can paddle from Francis Walters Dam to White Haven, from White Haven to Rockport, from Rockport to Glen Onoko, or from Pennsylvania Route 435 to Canal Park Allentown.

For the die-hard golfer, play at the Split Rock Country Club, in Lake Harmony, only a mile from Big Boulder. Others include the Jack Frost Resort, the Blue Mountain Resort, or the Mount Airy Lodge.

Pennsylvania is a state which abounds in natural beauty and a visit to one of her many state parks, such as the Lehigh Gorge State Park, are sure to restore your soul. You can camp in one of the nearly campgrounds, such as the WT Family Camping or the Fern Ridge Campground in Blakeslee, or the Jim Thorpe Camping Resort, in Jim Thorpe. Trails for hiking abound, and we recommend the Boulder Field Trail, in Carbon, only 3 miles away from Big Boulder Ski Resort. For complete relaxation, try the Mosey Wood Pond, in Carbon County.

Skiing can be a fun and exhilarating hobby, but it can also be dangerous if proper safety guidelines aren’t followed. Ensure that your next vacation or skiing trip goes smoothly; use these sure tips for skiing safely.

One of the most important tips for a safe skiing trips involves the protective headgear that’s recommended. The National Ski Patrol and the Professional Ski Instructors of America both encourage skiers to wear helmets but it isn’t unlawful not to. Wearing a certified helmet could help save your life in case of an accident and skiers of all levels should wear them to avoid injury.

Skiers and snowboarders should always take breaks if they become tired. Rest in the lodge and make sure you get enough to eat and drink. While this may seem common sense, skiing burns a lot of calories that need to be replenished. Exhausting yourself on the slopes is not only unwise; it’s unsafe. Leaving yourself in the cold while you’re tired and low on energy can have dire consequences so play it safe and take breaks every now and then.

One of the most important safety tips for skiers is to avoid trails that are above your limit. Always use a trail that’s appropriate for your level of experience and focus on the trail when you’re skiing. Remember that accidents usually happen when you’re not paying attention or when you’re taking on something you can’t handle. If you really want to take on a higher level trail, practice and get better so you can handle it.

Lastly, use extreme caution when skiing in low visibility conditions or during a white out. You’ll be glad you’re wearing goggles because they have amber lenses to help you see more definition. Make sure you control your speed because obstacles ahead of you will be very hard to see. Keep a safe distance from other skiers and use your poles to maintain your balance.

Always keep these safety tips in mind when skiing or snowboarding to ensure you have a safe and fun time.

It is an educational organization that was formed in 1994 by a small group from the Stroudsburg area, led by Albert Dowden and Alex Bensinger.

The museum is a nonprofit corporation recognized by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and supported by donors whose contributions are tax deductible. The museum’s primary exhibit is located in the base lodge of Camelback Ski Area in Tannersville, Pa. Camelback has been extremely generous in providing a home for the museum and supporting its programs.

The museum is committed to sharing with the public the joys of skiing and other winter sports. We seek their support and encouragement in expanding programs which preserve their history and heritage.

Our Hall of Fame identifies those individuals who have made significant contributions to the growth of winter sports. We honor them in special ceremonies and record their accomplishments in our permanent exhibits.

Located in the base lodge of Camelback Ski Area, the museum exhibits historic photos, biographies, equipment and memorabilia from yesteryear. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, American Association of Museums and the USSA are just a few of the organizations that collaborate with the Pennsylvania Ski and Winter Sports Museum to preserve and promote the history and rich culture of winter sports.
